Cool Math 4 Kids is the education focused website for elementary students.

The games are well designed and show what common core math standards they are relating to. In addition, on the side are quizzes students can take to help improve specific concepts based on the game and common core math standards.

Our favorite part of this website is the manipulatives which are further discussed below.

Ok… Now let’s dive into the six navigation sections to help you better understand how to navigate quickly and best use this website.

  1. Math Games
  2. Lessons
  3. Quizzes
  4. Manipulatives

Under the quiz section, you will find basic quizzes for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Personally, I didn’t find this to be that great of a resource…

…but I love the fact that on the bottom of the quiz you can click on the link “Print This Quiz as a Worksheet”.

It ends up making a professional math worksheet that can be helpful for teachers or parents.

4. Manipulatives- Cool Math 4 Kids Navigation Section

This section contains 4 different manipulatives.

I think this is the best resource of this entire website.

Ten Frame: Ten Frame is an online mathematical manipulative that helps students develop a basic number sense through the composition and decomposition of numbers within 5, 10, 20 and beyond. Cool Math 4 kids 10 frame also helps students understand counting, addition, and subtraction. Most importantly, it allows them to practice mental math and to “subitize” – instantly see how many of something there is.

Base Ten Blocks: Base Ten Block (also known as “Base 10 Blocks” and “Place Value Blocks” is an online mathematical manipulative that helps students learn addition, subtraction, number sense, place value and counting. It lets them investigate how to regroup and solve problems with whole numbers and eventually fractions and decimals.

Overall, Base Ten Blocks provides a visual foundation for the abstract algorithms and we want students to use as they grow.

Number Line: Number line is an online mathematical manipulative that help students develop greater flexibility in mental arithmetic as they actively construct mathematical meaning, number sense, and understanding of number relationships.

Their number line also helps students learn to tell time, by showing how numbers intervals on a line correspond to minute intervals on a clock.

Patterns Blocks: Pattern Blocks is an online mathematical manipulative that helps students develop spatial reasoning. As students become more familiar with composition and decomposition of shapes, they start to recognize “patterns,” which is one of the most important standards of mathematical practice.

Pattern blocks is a versatile manipulative that can be accessed by students of any age for remediation or enrichment.

5. Brain Teasers – Cool Math 4 Kids Navigation Section

This section has some great fun exercises designed to challenge the brain.

For example, the “Toothpick Squares” challenges you to figure out how you can move two toothpicks and create seven squares.

If you can’t figure it out, you can click on a solution to see what the answer is.

6. More – Cool Math 4 Kids Navigation Section

This section contains a variety of other helpful resources such as printable flashcards, Polyhedra, and tessellations which I have no clue what they are for!

In Summary…

Cool Math 4 kids provide excellent educational resources for teachers and parents to help K – 6th-grade student improve their mathematical skills.

The math games are pretty well developed yet and connect to math common core standards. However, they are still no match for Math Playground.

The best resource on this site, in our opinion, is the Manipulatives.

They are well designed and provide a great tool to help accomplish feats such as mental arithmetic, spatial reasoning, and basic number sense.
