Let’s face it–children struggle with math. Why? Well, for most kids, math class is a one-way ticket to snoozeville. I mean, why waste time doing math problems when you could be facebooking, or tweeting, or instagramming?
So how can you get your child interested in math?
There’s an app for that. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
Actually, there are tons of apps for that, and we’ve gone through and selected the top math iPhone apps (you’re welcome). All of these apps are fun, engaging, informative, and, best of all, they’re FREE!
Each of these apps is a sure-fire way to get your child interested in math, and some of them can even be used as cost-effective alternatives to personal tutoring.
1. YourTeacher – Math
Is your child struggling with 5th grade math? Pre-algebra? Geometry? The SAT? You name it—this app covers it.
YourTeacher’s Math App is a great alternative to traditional tutoring. Select from YourTeacher’s complete library of over 50 math courses for elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and standardized test prep.
Each course provides notes and step-by-step help on numerous math topics. The courses each contain over 100 lessons, which each include multiple-choice self-tests, as well as videos and interactive practice to keep your child interested.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Well there is one catch—only the first 5 lessons are free. After that you will have to pay $9.99 for each course.
I say, take this app for a spin! If your child likes it and their grades improve, then you might consider shelling out the extra cash for more lessons. (And after all, this price still definitely beats the cost of traditional tutoring!)
2. My Math Flash Cards App
Ah, flashcards—a learning method as old as time itself, but so time consuming! I mean really, who wants to sit around and write a bunch math problems on those 5 x 8 index cards? Nobody, that’s who.
What if I told you there was another way?
There’s an app for that! (Okay I’ll stop this time, I promise!)
The My Math Flash Cards App is specifically designed to help your child master, and memorize basic elementary math facts.
The My Math Flash Cards App is particularly helpful with:
- Multiplication, and
We’ve all had to memorize our times tables at some point in our life. So, why not make it a little easier on your child? The My Math Flash Cards App is super easy to use, and extremely customizable.
The best part about this app is that, unlike traditional flash cards, your child can use it to study on their own. However, parental supervision and encouragement is recommended–and can only help your child gain confidence and motivation.
3. Math Ninja Lite
Your child is sure to love this one!
In this fun, action-packed, educational game, your child will defend their treehouse against an evil, hungry tomato and his robotic army, choosing between ninja stars, smoke bombs, or ninja magic.
Your child will succeed in defending their math treasure by solving math problems as fast as they can, purchasing upgrades to help them along the way.
Math Ninja Lite is also very customizable, allowing you select your desired level of difficulty and tested math topics.
Be warned, this app is extremely addicting—your child will be having so much fun they won’t even realize they’re doing math!
Still not really sold on any of these apps? Still feel like nothing can replace the hands-on assistance of a traditional tutor? This app might change your mind!
MathCrunch offers live tutoring on nearly every math subject from pre-algebra to basic calculus.
It’s so easy too! Just snap a photo of your math homework, submit it, and you’ll instantly be paired with a tutor who can help solve your problem.
But there is one small catch. Much like YourTeacher’s Math app, you’re only given 20 free minutes of live tutoring. If you wish to keep using the app, you can purchase more minutes, or tweet about the app for more free minutes.
Sounds like a sweet deal if you ask me! Free math tutoring just for tweeting? Sign me up!
5. BrainPOP Featured Movie
If you have a kid in elementary school or middle school, odds are they’ve watched BrainPOP, or have at least heard of BrainPOP. It’s sort of the 21st century version of School House Rock.
BrainPOP features Tim, a boy fascinated by the world around him, and his robot buddy Moby. In each episode of BrainPOP, Tim and Moby explain different subjects in a way that is fun, educational, and relatable to kids all at the same time. Subjects covered include science, English, social studies and, of course, math!
Normally you need a subscription to BrainPOP in order to enjoy their fun-jucational films (see what I did there?), but the BrainPOP Featured Movie app allows your child to enjoy one free BrainPOP episode each day.
If you already have a subscription to BrainPOP, you’ll also have access to all of their award-winning content!
6. Lumosity Mobile
This is a great app–especially for young kids!
Lumosity was designed by neuroscientists to train memory, attention, and more. With foundations in the study of neuroplasticity, Lumosity games have improved working core cognitive abilities in several research studies.
These studies also reveal that people who use Lumosity have a higher apptitude for math (get it? Apptitude? Hah!), so this is a great app to get your child hooked on early–in order to prevent them from having learning problems down the road.
Not only is this app proven to be effective by several studies, but also, the games are just so fun! Seriously, what is it about these learning games that makes them so addicting?
7. Khan Academy
Ever heard of Khan Academy? Basically it’s this awesome website that allows you to learn almost anything for free. It doesn’t get much better than that, right? Well it just did!
Khan Academy’s new and improved iPhone app gives you access to Khan Academy’s complete library of over 4,200 videos and articles right at your fingertips!
Does your child need help with statistics? Calculus? Long division? Khan Academy’s gotcha covered. Just create an account or sign-in through Facebook and get help with math (or any other class for that matter) absolutely free of charge!
Remember that computer from Star Trek that could answer every question known to man? Well it exists now, and you can have it on your iPhone for free!
WolframAlpha is quite possibly the most useful, user-friendly app ever developed. Simply type in ANY question, including complex math problems, and WolframAlpha will answer it without fail.
So basically WolframAlpha is like Google on steroids.
I will say that WolframAlpha probably isn’t suitable to help your child improve their math skills…but it can definitely be used to check their work!
With all of these wonderful tools at your disposal, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to improve your child’s grades and get them more interested in math!
So what are you waiting for?
Whip out your iPhone, click on that app-store icon, and start downloading!
