3rd graders and up should be able to do these tables forward and backward in less than three seconds. For example, 7 x 8 = 56 and 56 is the same as 7 x 8 or 8 x 7. – Test your students even if they say already know them. Here’s a an article that teaches how to learn your multiplication tables. 

6th graders+ should understand how to compare, group, add, subtract, multiply, & divide them. – They should understand why we need common denominators for adding/subtracting fractions and also know how to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to percentages back and forth.

6th graders and up should also know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide negative and positive numbers. – Test their knowledge and use a variety of ways to demonstrate this. (A number line, positive & negative circles that cancel each other out, story about someone owing someone money, etc.)

After reviewing what skills are weak from pick up a book that reviews those skills and/or grade level. Here are our recommendations depending on grade level:

• K-5th graders, we recommend Spectrum Math Workbooks (grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
• 5-7th graders (approx.) who need a review of basic math and basic algebra, we recommend Master Math: Basic Math & Pre-Algebra (could be used in conjunction with Spectrum Workbook above) 
• 6-10th graders (approx.) who need algebra skills review, we recommend Barron’s Forgotten Algebra.
