A native of Taiwan, I have been in the Kirkland area since 2002, but prior to coming to the United States, I held a variety of occupations that relied on my ability to translate. This included as a Chinese-English translator in Taiwan for a few years, and an English teacher before that. I also held the position of Art History teacher in the community. As someone with a teaching background whose first language is Mandarin Chinese, it was practically a foregone conclusion that I would decide to offer language tutoring services to others. The truth is that I love teaching, and I take a special understanding of how challenging learning a second language can be when I work with students. My approach is far from formal; my instruction emphasizes conversational contexts as a way of gradually helping the student to build on their natural comprehension. Memorization is important, but rather than simply relying on repetition, I like to interject fun into the drills and exercises that range from the very basic to the significantly more advanced. This type of instruction helped with my own learning; I have a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from Fu Jen Catholic University, and a Master’s in Art History from Ohio State University. I have an aptitude for communication and use that as a touchstone for my lessons with students, as I also assist many Kirkland residents in preparing for the ACT and SAT. I am currently accepting new students from all levels, especially those who wish to learn Mandarin Chinese.

Born in China but living now near Kirkland, I represent an ideal fusion of modern tutoring in an ancient language. I have been a lifelong speaker of Mandarin Chinese, meaning that the students I work with enjoy the benefit of someone who can automatically model the use of the language, versus someone hazarding a guess halfway through a drill. Along with speaking the language, I also know how to teach in it. I believing that teaching Mandarin and introducing Chines culture are major strengths I offer my students, and this was developed through my earliest experience of tutoring at Wuhan University. For over a year, I worked with my classmates on a number of subjects, including English, which also qualifies me to tutor students in ACT, SAT, and other standardized test study prep. Having taught and learned both Chinese Mandarin and English, I am uniquely qualified to assist Kirkland area students with their own tutoring needs because I have both been in your shoes and already taught to others who were the before you. As a tutor, I strive to be positive, patient, and open in my communication style so that my students know what they can approach me whenever they need to. I consider myself a lifelong learner. I earned my Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Washington recently, and believe I will learn as much from you as you learn from me.

Numerous job postings advertise that being bilingual is a plus, and that recognition is a driving force between some of my own educational career choices. I am a native if Beijing, China, and so I am a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese. As a tutor in the Kirkland area, I have focused on increasing my competency across a number of areas, but I have special aptitude with languages and in addition to speaking Mandarin Chinese, also decided to dual major in Spanish and Economics while attending the University of California at Berkeley. My teaching experience is also somewhat varied; I have worked at a variety of after-school programs with children from the age of kindergarten through 12th grade, and I used that opportunity to really hone my skills as a tutor. Through these experiences, I learned that the key to succeeding is to have joy in the process. Learning is a privilege that not everyone in the world gets to experience, and in my work with students around Kirkland, I work diligently to foster a gratitude for the learning experiences my students have. Even if they fail, it represents an opportunity to learn, grow, and ultimately, to achieve. I like to work with my students to raise their confidence, which tends to be the most significant work I can do during our sessions. Although I am qualified to tutor students through the ACT and SAT study prep in addition to Mandarin Chinese, the real work is helping a student believe that they can access whatever goal they set for themselves.

Just one word describes my feelings about tutoring: passionate. The truth is, I am passionate about helping my students learn, whether it is acquiring a new language like Mandarin Chinese or in improving their performance in a lifelong subject, such as writing. As a graduate of the University of Washington’s Psychology program, I realized I had real potential as a teacher, and worked with children across multiple age levels to learn in ways that challenged their natural curiosity while encouraging them to have fun. I especially liked helping them paint, count candy, and identify new shapes. This helped me to understand that taking education seriously did not have to meet removing the elements of fun from it. Since coming to the Kirkland area, I have primarily worked with students in languages, specifically in learning Mandarin Chinese. In many ways, I have found the methods that are most effective with kids have a similarly high rate of success with older students in trying to learn a new language, such as roleplaying, games application, and other avenues of creative expression. As a tutor, I feel my job is to make learning work for the individual student, not the other way around, and I work to keep our sessions accommodating and stimulating. I am also available to help students with standardized test exam prep, or any other academic goals you might have for yourself.

Mandarin Chinese is my native language, so I am not new to speaking, writing, or even teaching I to others. In fact, I have been a teacher of Mandarin Chinese for almost a decade, working with students of all ages and grade levels to learn everything from the basics to the more advanced mechanics. Since coming to the United States, I have worked to round out my views as a teacher. First and foremost, I recognize that my students each have their own style of learning. I can do small group tutoring, but it is more effective to work with an individual at first to determine what kind of learning style they have. I have a preferred method of teaching, but it will always be tweaked to meet the needs of my individual students, not only the level of instruction but also the pace and style to ensure that comprehension is not lost in the shuffle of meeting a specific timeline. I also use the learning style to help determine ideal goals for us to reach. Again, this is always going to be adjustable, based on the need of the individual students. I aim for perfect pronunciation and grammar, but I also understand that any good goal takes time to achieve, whether it is mastering Mandarin Chinese earning a certain score on the ACT. In the Kirkland area, I work with students for standardized test prep in addition to Mandarin Chinese language tutoring. I owe my own education to this approach, having earned my Master’s in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from the Yunnan University in China, and believe it can do the same for you as well.
